How To Hire The Right Visual Marketing Pro

You’ve thought about hiring a professional to help with your video or design, but it seems too overwhelming. You’re not sure where to start or what to ask.

I get it. Over the past 15 years, I’ve both hired and been hired by a lot of different people. I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly on both sides of the equation.

Here are four questions to make sure you hire the right person for the job, the first time:

  1. Are they a quality and style match?
Look at their website, portfolio, or samples of past work. Is the quality of their work at a level you would be comfortable using to represent your brand? Is the style of what you see in their portfolio close to how you’d like your project to look? If not, find someone who offers the quality and style you need. Otherwise, you’ll waste time and money trying to “coach up” someone who is not on the same page.

  2. What is their process?
A creative professional’s “process” includes how they take in the information about a project, form and execute their ideas, and handle feedback. Ask about timeline, revisions, and deadlines. This will let you know what to expect about how and when you’ll be able to weigh in on the project, and when it can be completed.

  3. How do they charge?
Some people charge hourly and others charge by the project, with a certain number of revisions built in. Understanding this will help you know what to expect on the budget front.

  4. Do they offer testimonials or references?
If you’re going in cold, this is a good way to verify that this professional’s process works well for their clients and they can produce good results.

Are you wondering if you could do it yourself in the amount of time it would take to ask these questions? Maybe, if you have the right skill set.

But, here’s the deal: Once you find the right professional and they get to know your brand, you have more than someone to just execute your current project. The right professional becomes a trusted partner who can translate the concepts in your head and continually take work off your plate, saving you time and opportunity cost again and again.

Who wouldn’t want that?

If you’re saying (shouting?!) “Yes, me!”, then I’d love to talk.
